Shopify has made its most significant bet on the future of commerce yet: Agentic Storefronts, a new capability that enables merchants to sell products directly through major AI platforms — including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Mode.
A New Front Door for E-Commerce
In the agentic commerce model, AI systems act as personal shoppers. A consumer asks ChatGPT to “find me a quality rain jacket under £120” and the AI — empowered by Shopify’s product data and checkout infrastructure — surfaces matching products, compares them, and completes the purchase. No browser tab required.
Shopify President Harley Finkelstein has described this as “a merit-based discovery engine” that prioritises relevance over paid placement — a potentially significant advantage for smaller merchants who currently struggle to compete with well-funded ad budgets.
Universal Commerce Protocol
Central to the initiative is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed with Google. This open standard allows AI agents to understand product data, compare offerings, and complete transactions autonomously across platforms.
Shopify is a launch partner for:
- UCP (with Google)
- ChatGPT Instant Checkout (with OpenAI)
- Microsoft Copilot Checkout (with Microsoft)
Sidekick Evolves into an AI Coworker
Alongside Agentic Storefronts, Shopify’s AI assistant Sidekick has matured from a Q&A tool into a proactive “AI coworker.” It now autonomously handles back-end tasks — product labelling, inventory management, returns processing, and data syncing with ERP systems — while generating personalised recommendations for merchants based on store data and market trends.
Why It Matters
This is a structural shift in digital commerce. If AI agents become the primary way consumers discover and buy products, the entire SEO-and-advertising playbook that powers e-commerce today becomes secondary to how well your product data integrates with AI systems.
Shopify is betting that merchants who adopt agentic infrastructure now will gain a first-mover advantage as this channel grows. The early evidence suggests the bet is serious.
